DescriptionARCHINA is 16 metres long and carvel planked. It was launched from Hayes shed in late December 1933, then rigged and finished off early in 1934. It was a showcase of their building talents, and was one of the largest yachts built in that period. The planking was full length, with no joints. The first owner was Luscombe Newman.

ARCHINA is a fine example of an elegant ketch-rigged yacht of its period and in 2006 remains active as a cruising boat. The interior is very spacious with a long saloon uninterrupted by bulkheads. The designer Cecil Boden is better known for his many workboat plans and this graceful yacht is a rare example of another side of his output.

ARCHINA crossed the starting line with the first fleet of race entrants, but withdrew early on in the strong conditions that the yachts encountered. It is understood to have raced in six Sydney to Hobart races overall, in 1948 it won its division. After a substantial restoration project ARCHINA also took part in the 1994 50th anniversary race.

In the stormy 1959 Montague Island race it lost its mizzen mast, and in 1961 it was one of the entrants in the Auckland to Sydney yacht race.

In 2012 ARCHINA remains in excellent condition and is seen regulary on Sydney Harbour.
SignificanceARCHINA is a wooden yacht built in NSW in 1933. It is an ocean racing yacht from a design by Cecil Boden, and was launched in 1933 with some fanfare due to its size and classic style. It is an example of a large yacht built by James Hayes and Sons in Careening Cove, North Sydney, better known for some of their smaller Sydney Harbour cruising yachts. ARCHINA was an entry in the first Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race in 1945 and won its divison in the 1948 race. It remains sailing on Sydney Harbour in excellent condition.
