DescriptionCompleted in September 1948 with Job Number 919 KARA KALINGA followed KAITUNA, the first of the type built after World War II and launched in July 1948.

The vessel's original name was KARA KA, but its owner Sydney Tyler was requested by the authorities to change the name because it was already in use by another registered vessel. Tyler simply added 'linga' to create the new name.

The hull is planked in oregon, painted white with a varnished superstructure, the standard Halvorsen finish. It was launched with a twin Morris petrol engine installation, the normal configuration for the vessels.

KARA KALINGA was renamed FREYA for a period, probably during the 1950s when it was based on the Gippsland Lakes in Victoria. It has remained in private ownership and has always been used as a recreational vessel.
SignificanceKARA KALINGA is a 36 foot (10.97 m) standard cruiser built in 1948 by Lars Halvorsen Son's firm for private use. It represents a medium-sized Halvorsen motor cruiser, one of the main types used in their hire fleet. It was the third of the 36 footers built.
